Then he walked up to the register we were at and said to the checkout clerk, very politely,

"Excuse me sir, but I think this is racist.

Irak 2005  Army training and other stories
KalashnikovThe Iraqi Army Just announced few days ago that they will be replacing the AK-47 Assault rifle,

(widely known as the Kalashnikov after its Russian designer Michael Kalashnikov) which has been

the standard issue weapon of the Iraqi Army since the 60s, with the American Made M-16 and M- 4.
So, what is wrong with this news?

   Wind turbines  Wind Pumps
In the semi-arid Mwingi District in Eastern Kenya, Joseph Ututu and his three brothers have revolutionized the local water supply by digging wells and constructing a wind-pump. The ingenious pump, constructed from old bicycle parts and roofing materials was designed by Joseph Ututu after spending four years at a technical college...Evidence suggests that in rural development, initiatives often take a stronger root when they have been “discovered” locally, rather than introduced from elsewhere. That shouldn’t mean an end to the propagation of sustainable technologies, but it does perhaps suggest that stimulating people to solve their own problems may lead to more lasting solutions.

It is also well know here that building materials left unattended simply walk away. Of course, this a problem everywhere, but here it includes piles of gravel and sand. Amazing how mobile these things can be. One of my friends had her house painted, and noticed the painter was using much more paint than expected. At the same time, a house down the street was being painted, coincidently, the same color. The painter was painting both houses, but only my friend was paying for paint.

Mosquito Dark Things on  Wings       Guyana-Gyal

Paint me with citronella oil and call me Warrior-Gyal. I going on a hunt, I going for the kill and the enemy is them Dark Things on Wings. Them Things sneak up with these May-June rains, sneak in between the pouring wah-wah, and sometimes pitta-patta. As soon as the rain ease up and them grey clouds pull back one kanchee bit, them Dark Things on Wings rush out in black flocks. I want to believe that they form unions - they arrive so thick, in unison.

Cooking Now, you must use old-fashioned, sticky rice,

not the wimpy Uncle Ben’s stuff.

Uncle Ben’s rice is like beautiful women

     - just too fluffy and precious for serious applications.
